Project: Novel

Happy Monday! It’s been a busy week here and I feel like I spent the whole week juggling and somehow I managed not to drop the ball. That’s right, I had a very good week writing wise. Other things were good too. And because I want to continue the momentum, I decided to write a weekly feature called Project: Novel.

The main reason I was so busy writing this week was because I’ve made the decision to switch gears a bit by changing my finished manuscript from a romantic suspense to a suspense (there will be a romantic thread but it’s not going to be 50% of the story). This means a significant amount of work, scenes to be added, scenes to be deleted, scenes to be re-written. I didn’t make this decision easily, I’ve been wrestling with it for a while. Even with all the work that it will require I feel that I’ve made the right decision.

Last week I have taken a stack of index cards and identified each scene that I’ve written, brainstormed new scenes and made notes of new twists and turns with snippet of dialogue. Yes, those voices were speaking to me this week. (Since this is a writer’s blog I can say that without fear of being committed). I have started to pull together a comprehensive outline using those index cards and then I will be able to see where I need to add or tweak. Which is my goal for this coming week and then rewrite the first three scenes to reflect those changes.

By breaking down these huge tasks into smaller pieces and assigning a reasonable time frame I don’t feel overwhelmed, I feel very excited about the novel and about my main character, Cassie.

My plan is to have weekly updates until the manuscript is completely rewritten. This will hold me accountable. And please feel free to share your weekly updates also.

Have a great week!

Shih-Tzu (and a Turkey) Saturday

Spring has arrived but it sure doesn’t feel like spring. I woke with the sound of wind whipping through the trees. It definitely sounds more like fall than spring. But the forecast for next week shows temps in the 70s Fingers-crossed because these pups want to get out and have some serious play time and long walks.

Also, this week Stella returned. I saw her one early morning having breakfast at the bird feeder.

While we’re waiting on spring to really get here, I thought I’d take a look back at the Blizzard of 2013 and try a new gadget. I created a collage.

Have a great Saturday!

No Need To Explain

There is no need to explain why your character did something. If you ask somebody to read your work (another writer or reader) and they question a character’s motivation for doing something, don’t waste your time explaining why the character did it unless you need to work through HOW to show your character’s motivation for doing something because clearly you didn’t. Pointing out that in prior chapters/scenes you’d set up the so-called motivation doesn’t cut it. Or, simply say “thank you” and move on. Because if you so strongly believe you have all your ducks in a row, then clearly the person who posed the question will get it. Maybe I don’t get it, but I do know motivation when I see it. And I also know that writing is tough. Hell, critique is tough. But it’s all apart of the job.

Five Things About Nikki

I’m thinking a lot about the heroine of my current WIP these days. She’s in kinda a tough spot right now. Lets just say that body number two is on the horizon.

Knowing your characters is essential to writing a character driven story. So in thinking about Nikki as I write her story and get to know her, I’ve come up with five things about her that I didn’t know when I started the book.

1. She’s a yogi. She’s a certified yoga teacher.
2. She doesn’t like knitting (when I started the book she did).
3. She lost her best friend when she needed a friend the most.
4. She likes country music.
5. She volunteers.

I’m looking forward to learning more about Nikki as I continue to write her story.

Small Talk

What things did you learn about your heroine/hero that you didn’t know when you started writing your book?

Today I…

Today I was totally frustrated with this blog. For some reason my photos won’t upload properly, all I get is a file name to click on in order to open up the photograph.

Today I’m finishing up my early start to spring cleaning. One of the things I spent some time on was my exercise video/dvd collection. I did manage to part with some of them. ( I would have shared a picture, but I am unable to due to reasons I don’t know).

Today I Facetimed (not sure if that’s really a word) with my CP, Ellie.

Today I got the pups out twice. First, we ran an errand to get their food. Then later in the day I got them out for a walk. Great day for a walk.

Today I worked on two chapters with the feedback Ellie gave me. I’m really loving this story. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Today I hit the bike for another 20 minutes. We got an exercise bike last week. To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about it.

So, what did you do today?
